The regular village Coche 1999 was one of the most glorious wines of the evening. We’d been due to compare it with Lafon’s Clos de la Barre 1999 but it was spoilt by the burgundian scourge of premature oxidation so we tasted a Lafon village Meursault 1998 instead that was a little stolid by comparison. And of the two 1996 village Meursaults, the Coche was much livelier, the Lafon flat and rather lacking fruit, suggesting a hint of oxidation. The white burgundy village of Meursault is home to an increasing number of brilliant vignerons, but the two most famous names are Coche-Dury and Comtes Lafon.

The first thing you notice is the assertive bouquet of gun powder and hints of popcorn – which can be very distinctive when the wines are young. They also have quite a considerable note of new oak, which together patrick sullivan pinot noir with the various nuances of the chardonney grape gives a complex and challenging nose. Coche-Dury are very expressive wines that really jumps from the glass. It is not subtle or for that matter aristocratic wines, no they are quite flamboyant wines of almost incredibly high quality.

The palate is chewy on the entry, a little tough at the moment but possessing plenty of matière and delivering spicy dark berry and mulberry fruit toward the grippy finish. PNP. Flinty nose, with some nectarine and lemon. Chalky and lively palate, tons of acid and some nuanced and compressed citrus and orchard fruit. Shows beautifully and better than expected from a  solar vintage like 18. The wines we tasted may have conformed to each domaine’s reputation but there are signs of change.

Coche-Dury are, of course, also very skilled in the cellar, but I think it is in the  vineyards he makes the big difference, which is probably one of the reasons that nobody has been able to copy his style and qualities.
He began his career in the 1960's, lending a hand to his father at the family estate, in Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune. In 1973, he inherited the domain, with its 10,5 hectares of grapevines and many appellations, and got to work. The wine lover revealed himself to be a wine genius, constantly reaching for perfection.

We tasted vintage pairs, not blind, first of all 2008 village Meursaults, of which the Lafon was already extremely friendly and open, the Coche rather austere and standoffish. Lafon was also the more charming of the two 2005 village Meursaults – in fact it tasted as though it was at its peak whereas our particular bottle of the Coche was unusually flat. Dominique Lafon is in many ways Burgundy’s best-known ambassador, certainly of his generation.
While they make some  red wines from Pinot Noir, the house is famous for its highly collectible white wines made from Chardonnay. In fact, Coche-Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru wine is consistently ranked among the top 100 most expensive wines. The 2015 vintage from Coche-Dury stands out for its exceptional quality and vibrant character, largely attributed to the meticulous craftsmanship that defines this esteemed winery. This particular year was marked by a favorable growing season in Burgundy, which allowed for the optimal development of flavors and aromas in the grapes. The result is a wine that not only reflects the terroir but also the skillful techniques employed during its production. The hard Comblanchian limestone which disappears deep underground around Nuits-Saint-Georges reappears here where, as one moves southward, red wines give way to whites.
